Uogashi Meicha has two different Hon-Gyokuro produced in Uji and Yame regions. Although they are both classified into Hon-Gyokuro, concept of making tea varies according to each production area.

If we described them in one word, we would choose "maturity" for Uji, and "freshness" for Yame.

Aged tea leaves gives a mellow umami and aroma to tea produced in Uji. Thorough management of freshness provides tea produced in Yame with a pleasant aroma and umami.

It is difficult to tell which of the two is better, so please try them and savor the difference in flavor. Uogashi Meicha offers only the highest grade Hon-Gyokuro in the National Tea Competition.

  • About Gyokuro
  • Shelf Life
The finest grade of Japanese green tea, gyokuro is sweet with a unique and mildly astringent aroma and mellow umami. The tea leaves are cultivated using the ooishita method, which involves shading the young tea leaves from direct sunlight for around 20 days after they first start to appear. This distinctive process inhibits astringency, producing tea leaves with large amounts of ""theanine"", an amino acid that enhances umami.
